Recently, everyone seems to be getting sick. What exactly are we suffering from? Today, let's get to know hMPV. hMPV or Human Metapneumovirus is a virus that causes respiratory tract infections.
It can affect people of all ages but tends to be more severe in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. hMPV was first discovered in 2001 in the Netherlands and has become one of the major causes of respiratory tract infections worldwide.
hMPV symptoms are similar to common cold symptoms but can become more severe in some cases. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, sore throat, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, complications may include pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, and even respiratory failure.
hMPV can spread through various channels, such as coughing, sneezing, contact with infected droplets, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. The peak outbreak period is during winter, especially from December onwards.
Effective methods to prevent hMPV infection are similar to preventing cold or COVID-19:
Frequent hand washing with soap or alcohol gel
Wearing masks in crowded places
Avoiding close contact with sick people
Cleaning frequently touched surfaces
Maintaining good health by eating a balanced diet
Although hMPV doesn't have specific treatment or direct vaccines, there's no need to panic as it's a long-existing disease. If we take good care of ourselves and know the right prevention methods, we can maintain good health without much difficulty.
During this winter season, important nutrients that help protect our body include Vitamin C, Quercetin, and Vitamin D. Quercetin, in particular, helps maintain upper respiratory tract health effectively, making it an essential supplement during this winter season.
